The prime season for the phalaenopsis orchid to bloom is between December and May; a good five months that the plant will have at its fullest potential. This indoor plant should be fun to grow, giving you the confidence to care for many orchid plants.

Due to the fact that this plant is cared for indoors, you should not have to worry too much about pests. However, if pests are a concern, it is possible to find environmentally friendly pest controls such as neem oil. Neem oil is a vegetable oil extracted from a type of evergreen tree that has many different uses including pest repellents. It is commonly used in organic farming because it is a natural substance.

This indoor plant is not fond of direct sunlight but it does love to be in indirect, natural light. Considering it is an indoor plant, if you have any East or West facing windows the plant will not be harmed from any direct sun rays. It will be able to soak in early morning or late afternoon sunshine without frying. If you do not have any ideal windows for your plant, you can use fluorescent lights to simulate regular day light.

This plant also likes to be watered- not too much, and not on rare occasions. You should never let this plant go completely dry, and you should also avoid drenching the plant because it could cause moulding to the routes that are in such a confined space in the pot. Once a week or about once every 1.5 weeks should be a good place to start, and once your plant is affected by its environment you will be able to judge if you are watering too frequently or infrequently. After you thoroughly water it you should let it dry till the soil is almost completely dry before watering it again. Also, the indoor temperature should not drop below 60 degrees and not rise above 85 degrees.

It is also beneficial to feed your phalaenopsis orchid fertilizer. A slow release fertilizer with equal parts of N-P-K is ideal. There are fertilizers that are made specifically for orchids, such as Green Jungle Orchid Food, that is a well known treat for your growing orchid. It is also recommended to not feed your orchid while it is in bloom.

Phalaenopsis orchids are originally from Southeast Asia ranging from the Himalayas to some islands in the Philippines to even northern Australia. This tropical plant enjoys humidity, so when keeping one in your home, bear in mind that a dry atmosphere will prevent optimum prosperity for your plant. This is because the phalaenopsis orchids are of monopodial growth, which means that its growth habit forces it to grow upward from a single point, or in this case, a single, upright stem.

This monopodial growing plant does not have a rhizome or pseudobulbs. A rhizome a modified stem which grows horizontally near or under the soil and its purpose is to allow for a new part of the plant to sprout. A pseudobulb is very similar in that it can be used to grow a new orchid from the original parent orchid. Because it does not have a rhizome or pseudobulb it is unable to store its moisture in these places where other plants and even other types of orchids (such as a Cymbidium orchids) usually store their moisture, so often they have fleshy leaves that retain moisture.

If your phalaenopsis is well loved and cared for, it is possible to have around ten leaves grow from your plant over a period of time. This orchid usually has one or two thick leaves growing from the top each year as the basal leaves of the plant drop off.

Due to the fact that this plant does not have a rhizome or pseudobulb to keep it hydrated, it does appreciate being moisturised and it does well living in humidity where it can take moisture from the air to nurture itself. This is why it is native to the tropical areas of southeast Asia where humidity is a common weather condition. In fact, there is even a part of Tawain named Orchid Island because of the phalaenopsis orchid which is very common there. In these areas, this plant grows outdoors and is able to survive not only because of the humid weather, but also because in these tropical areas the tall canopies of the trees cover the small plants, shading them from direct sunlight.

Avoiding direct sunlight and having the right amount of moisture is imparative to the growth of phalaenopsis orchids, which is why these are indoor plants in the United States. Only in the tropical areas where the eco systems and weather conditions work hand in hand are the places where this orchid can grow outdoors.

Phalaenopsis orchids can be a variety of different colors because the majority of these orchids today are hybrids. The phalaenopsis has become so popular on a global level that many States and countries are producing them on a commercial level because the demand is constantly growing.

More people are interested in purchasing this orchid because it is not only simple to take care of with consistent care, but it is also a rewarding plant that stays in bloom for a long period of time from winter through spring. Orchids originally were only available at speciality orchid shows or floral shops but now it is possible to find them at grocery stores, hardware stores, and even farmer’s markets.

The growing demand for phalaenopsis orchids has inspired different hybrids to be incorporated into the species. There are the standard hybrids which include the large white, pink, or striped flowers. These are the most common amongst the phalaenopsis orchid. There are also different colors that include red, orange, and yellow, as well as different patterns including spots or bars. The varieties can be simply ‘mixed and matched’ to please the consumer who not only wants to purchase an orchid, but one that has individuality based on its appearance.

Certain hybrids vary in size. The largest of the phalaenopsis hybrids are specific forms of the white flowered plants as well as the pink flowered plants. These plants can grow up to twenty five-inch flowers, which means the stem is long enough and sturdy enough to hold twenty large flowers. This basically means that one of these popular hybrids can be very large because of the fact that it is monopodial, or one, upright growing stem.

Some hybrids are smaller with an abundant number of smaller flowers. These hybrids usually include the brighter flowers that might have different patterns. These hybrids originally started with a standard large, white phalaenopsis orchid crossed with a brighter, more unusual orchid. They produce a smaller plant that has dominant bright colors, but the same shape of the phalaenopsis.

Over time these hybrids have been bread to be as large as the white or pink phalaenopsis, but still retain the unique color qualities of the more vibrant orchids. Some hybrids are also grown with the intention to create miniature hybrids. These are often grown in cooler, dryer climates and bread with smaller plants to produce even smaller hybrids. There are many different hybrids of the phalaenopsis orchid. The varieties are easy to find and purchase.

Purchasing a phalaenopsis orchid is not considered a cliché floral purchase. The phalaenopsis orchid is not only a beautiful plant, but it is a long lasting plant that will be appreciated by the receiver if it is a gift, or even the consumer if they choose to keep it for themselves. This specific type of orchid is becoming a widely popular plant, and it is not difficult to purchase one if you are wanting to add beauty to your desk at work, give it to a loved one, or give it as a gift.

Orchids used to be difficult to come by and were only found for sale at orchid events or speciality floral shoppes. Today they can be found at a variety of locations ranging from your local farmer’s market to large, corporate grocery stores or even construction stores with nursery departments. It is also possible to order your dream phalaenopsis online. The phalaenopsis orchid is especially easy to find for sale, and the prices can be very inexpensive. Depending on the size and style of pot, you can find a phalaenopsis orchid for under ten dollars. If you are interested in a larger plant with a nice pot and nice base structure that might include rocks and other decorative styles you might be paying around two-hundred dollars.

The phalaenopsis orchid has been a meaningful plant to different cultures over the course of history. According to ancient Greeks, the orchid symbolizes love, innocence, beauty, and strength. In Greek history orchids were tied to virility and it was said that if the father of an unborn child ate large orchid tubers the family would have a boy, but if the mother ate small orchid tubers they would have a girl. In Victorian times orchids became a symbol of luxury and wealth because of their exotic and distinctive appearance. This view of orchids carries on today and they are still considered mysterious and rare. In astrology, the orchid is the flower of the Aquarius.

Phalaenopsis orchids are a unique gift to give. Their exotic appearance alludes to the idea that it is a rare plant, and is therefore received with great appreciation. Orchids also make for beautiful floral arrangements such as bouquets or wedding flowers. Due to the fact that they can be found virtually anywhere at any price, these plants can be used in any sort of event. Also, because there are so many hybrids of the phalaenopsis orchid, you can truly find the perfect color and pattern match for whatever event you might be throwing or gift you would be giving.
