Phalaenopsis Orchid Care Guide

Many people think that taking care of a phalaenopsis orchid is difficult work, yet with the basic tools and understanding of the plant it is not as hard as it seems. The prime season for the phalaenopsis orchid to bloom is between December and May; a good five months that the plant will have at its fullest potential. This indoor plant should be fun to grow, giving you the confidence to care for many orchid plants.

Due to the fact that this plant is cared for indoors, you should not have to worry too much about pests. However, if pests are a concern, it is possible to find environmentally friendly pest controls such as neem oil. Neem oil is a vegetable oil extracted from a type of evergreen tree that has many different uses including pest repellents. It is commonly used in organic farming because it is a natural substance.

This indoor plant is not fond of direct sunlight but it does love to be in indirect, natural light. Considering it is an indoor plant, if you have any East or West facing windows the plant will not be harmed from any direct sun rays. It will be able to soak in early morning or late afternoon sunshine without frying. If you do not have any ideal windows for your plant, you can use fluorescent lights to simulate regular day light.

This plant also likes to be watered- not too much, and not on rare occasions. You should never let this plant go completely dry, and you should also avoid drenching the plant because it could cause moulding to the routes that are in such a confined space in the pot. Once a week or about once every 1.5 weeks should be a good place to start, and once your plant is affected by its environment you will be able to judge if you are watering too frequently or infrequently. After you thoroughly water it you should let it dry till the soil is almost completely dry before watering it again. Also, the indoor temperature should not drop below 60 degrees and not rise above 85 degrees.

It is also beneficial to feed your phalaenopsis orchid fertilizer. A slow release fertilizer with equal parts of N-P-K is ideal. There are fertilizers that are made specifically for orchids, such as Green Jungle Orchid Food, that is a well known treat for your growing orchid. It is also recommended to not feed your orchid while it is in bloom.
