Where are Phalaenopsis Orchids From?
Phalaenopsis orchids are originally from Southeast Asia ranging from the Himalayas to some islands in the Philippines to even northern Australia. This tropical plant enjoys humidity, so when keeping one in your home, bear in mind that a dry atmosphere will prevent optimum prosperity for your plant. This is because the phalaenopsis orchids are of monopodial growth, which means that its growth habit forces it to grow upward from a single point, or in this case, a single, upright stem.
This monopodial growing plant does not have a rhizome or pseudobulbs. A rhizome a modified stem which grows horizontally near or under the soil and its purpose is to allow for a new part of the plant to sprout. A pseudobulb is very similar in that it can be used to grow a new orchid from the original parent orchid. Because it does not have a rhizome or pseudobulb it is unable to store its moisture in these places where other plants and even other types of orchids (such as a Cymbidium orchids) usually store their moisture, so often they have fleshy leaves that retain moisture.
If your phalaenopsis is well loved and cared for, it is possible to have around ten leaves grow from your plant over a period of time. This orchid usually has one or two thick leaves growing from the top each year as the basal leaves of the plant drop off.
Due to the fact that this plant does not have a rhizome or pseudobulb to keep it hydrated, it does appreciate being moisturised and it does well living in humidity where it can take moisture from the air to nurture itself. This is why it is native to the tropical areas of southeast Asia where humidity is a common weather condition. In fact, there is even a part of Tawain named Orchid Island because of the phalaenopsis orchid which is very common there. In these areas, this plant grows outdoors and is able to survive not only because of the humid weather, but also because in these tropical areas the tall canopies of the trees cover the small plants, shading them from direct sunlight.
Avoiding direct sunlight and having the right amount of moisture is imparative to the growth of phalaenopsis orchids, which is why these are indoor plants in the United States. Only in the tropical areas where the eco systems and weather conditions work hand in hand are the places where this orchid can grow outdoors.
